Avoiding Imposter Scams: Key Tips and Strategies

What is an Imposter scam?

Imposter scams occur when a criminal tricks you by pretending to be someone you trust. These scams can be highly convincing and often lead to significant financial loss or personal information theft. Here are some essential tips to help you avoid falling victim to imposter scams.

Be Suspicious

Always be cautious of unexpected contact. Criminals often initiate contact by phone, email, or text, claiming to be someone they trust, like a government official, a tech support representative, or even a family member. Be wary of caller ID, as it can be easily spoofed to display a trusted number.

Don't Give Out Personal Information

Never share sensitive information such as your name, address, Social Security number, PINs, passwords, or financial details over the phone or through a website unless you know who you are dealing with. Legitimate organizations will not ask for such information through these methods.

Don't Engage

If you receive an unsolicited call, hang up immediately. If you do answer the phone, say "Hello" once. If no one responds, block the number. Never trust the voice on the other end if they urgently request money or personal information.

Do Your Research

Verify the legitimacy of the contact by locating the organization's contact number on its official website and calling it directly. Never use the contact details provided in the call or text message you received. This ensures that you speak to a legitimate organization, not an imposter.

Be Careful with Emails

Avoid opening emails from unknown senders. Be cautious with links and new website addresses, as they can lead to phishing sites designed to steal your information. Never open attachments or click on links in emails that make you feel unsure about the sender.

Take Precautions

Use strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication on your financial accounts to add an extra layer of security. Keep your software and security systems current to protect against potential vulnerabilities.

Reporting Scams

If you suspect you have been a scam victim, you can file a complaint at reportfraud.ftc.gov. Taking immediate action can help protect you and others from further harm.

Following these tips and remaining vigilant can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to imposter scams. Stay informed and always question unexpected requests for personal information or money.

Excellent customer service streamlined and transparent process. The representatives are efficient, knowledgeable, and understanding of the type of loans offered by Credit Union.

The USSFCU behaves as a credit union ought to behave. The staff works with and for the members, not for a corporate board. Interest rates for a car loan, a home improvement loan, and a mortgage are low and terms are transparent.
